Portrait of Renell Medrano: Courtesy of Music Art Fashion Forward

Renell Medrano is a Dominican-American photographer and visual artist based in New York. She is best known for her intimate and moving portraits of Black and Latino subjects, who are often her friends or community members. Born and raised in the Bronx, she is mostly inspired by her native New York City and Dominican Republic and is passionate about seeking change in her community and her culture.

She has said that the places she grew up around was “super-raw beauty” and that’s what she carries in her work and aims for. Her style of artmaking blends high fashion with documentary photography, ultimately aiming to capture a narrative of joy, vulnerability or cultural pride. She often uses minimal equipment and ultilizes storytelling and natural light to best capture her subjects.

Highlights:
  • Medrano graduated from Parsons School of Design with a BFA in Photography.
  • She has had a solo exhibition held in NYC called “PAMPARA” which payed homage to her Dominican Heritage.
  • She has worked with major brands like Nike, Fenty Beauty, Ivy Park, Marc Jacobs and more.
  • Medrano was featured in the Dazed 100 list, which highlights influential and innovative young creatives shaping culture.
