First of all, we wish you a Happy and Blessed New Year! Thank you for helping us make 2024 so memorable. Miami MoCAAD is excited to share new creative journeys with you in 2025!

And as we welcome 2025, January 1 is a day of profound significance as we honor the Haitian Revolution and celebrate the anniversary of Haitian independence. On this day in 1804, Haiti became the first independent Black republic in the world, marking the culmination of one of the most remarkable struggles for freedom in human history.

The Haitian Revolution (1791–1804) was a powerful uprising of enslaved Africans and free people of color who overthrew French colonial rule. It was fueled by the unrelenting pursuit of liberty, justice, and equality. This movement not only secured independence for Haiti but also struck a blow to the institution of slavery and inspired liberation efforts worldwide.

At its helm was Toussaint L’Ouverture, a brilliant leader whose military and political strategy transformed a rebellion into a revolutionary triumph. L’Ouverture’s vision of freedom and sovereignty laid the foundation for Haiti’s enduring legacy of resilience and defiance against oppression.

In Miami, the revolutionary spirit of Haiti lives on through the incredible work of Haitian artists who draw from this powerful history to create art that inspires and educates. Artists like Edouard Duval-Carrié bring history and mythology to life with dynamic mixed-media works, while Adler Guerrier explores themes of identity and migration, weaving personal and political narratives into his creations. Spaces like the Little Haiti Cultural Complex provide a platform for these artists and keep Haitian culture thriving in our city.

As we reflect on the Haitian Revolution and its significance, let us also uplift the Haitian artistic community in Miami. Their work not only preserves the legacy of Haiti’s fight for freedom but also amplifies its relevance in today’s world.

Wishing you a year filled with inspiration and empowerment!

Warm regards,
