Thomas W. Commeraw
Thomas W. Commeraw (c. 1772–1823), also known erroneously as Thomas H. Commereau, was an early 19th century African-American potter and businessman. Commeraw was an African-American ceramist producing ceramics in early-19th-century New York working between 1797 and 1819. Like many of his contemporaries, he was born enslaved and then manumitted – for Commeraw this happened in 1779, when he was about seven years old. He operated a ceramics business on the Lower East Side waterfront on Corlears Hook. His work was known for its painted blue tassels, scallops, and petals.
